Myopia
The most common visual impairment in people under 40 is a refractive error called myopia. Commonly referred to as nearsightedness, people with myopia are able to see objects clearly close up, but struggle to see at a distance. If you find it difficult to read road signs or watching a movie in theaters, be sure to schedule an eye exam at our office. As skilled providers of vision care, the office of A Visual Affair can accurately diagnose myopia as well as other types of refractive errors and provide corrective lenses and other solutions in care to help patients of all ages enjoy optimal vision.
Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, which prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. While myopia can affect people at every stage of life, the onset of this type of refractive error typically occurs during childhood. While vision screening are often perform in schools, myopia is more thoroughly diagnosed with a comprehensive eye examination that includes a visual acuity test and the use of advanced diagnostic instruments to comfortably assess both eye anatomy and function. During this visit, we’ll also discuss any visual symptoms or difficulties that are occurring, as well as review the medical history to determine the presence of any contributing factors. Children with undiagnosed and untreated myopia typically experience difficulty reading the blackboard at school to the extent that it can compromise their academic performance. Our office welcomes patients of all ages for care. For children who may not yet be old enough to identify letters on an exam chart, we will apply age-appropriate methods for assessing vision. We may have your child identify pictures, rather than letters of the alphabet.
Once diagnosed and the appropriate prescription determined, correction for myopia is relatively straightforward. While the most common choices are eyeglasses or contact lenses, LASIK procedures or a special contact lenses that are worn only at night are also effective options in care.
